WHITTIER, Calif. – Katrina Thoreson
scored four goals and Anahisa Aguirre made eight
saves but the Poets were held scoreless in the fourth quarter as
No. 2 Pomona-Pitzer held off the Whittier College women's
water polo team, 8-5, on Wednesday afternoon in the final game
played at the Lillian Slade Aquatics Center.
Thoreson scored two of her four goals in the first quarter. The
first came less than a minute from the opening sprint on a lob shot
over the outstretched arms of the Pomona-Pitzer goalie. The
Sagehens answered the Thoreson scoring strike with a three-goal run
to hold a 3-1 lead at the 2:26 mark of the first stanza.
Whittier (13-15, 2-4 SCIAC) drew consecutive ejections at 2:13
and 1:25, respectively, and capitalized on the second with a man-up
goal to cut the Sagehen lead to 3-2 at the end of one.
Pomona-Pitzer scored at 6:55 of the second frame to extend its
lead to 4-2 but Samantha McCord scored from
outside of 10 meters and Thoreson notched her second goal to even
the score at 4-4 at the intermission.
The second half started the same way the first did, with a
Thoreson goal. Her score at 6:20 gave the Poets their first lead
since they went up 1-0 to start the game. Pomona-Pitzer needed only
28 seconds to even the count at 5-5 as it scored on its ensuing
possession.
Whittier drew an ejection midway through the third but
couldn't capitalize while the Sagehens took advantage of
their man-up situation with the go-ahead goal at 3:47, just 11
seconds into its advantage.
Pomona-Pitzer scored at 4:33 and 3:36 of the final quarter to
take a three-goal, 8-5, lead. WC drew an ejection at 2:44 but
failed to score and their last ditch effort in another man
advantage came up short at the 1:24 mark.
The Poets will play its final regular season game of the year on
Saturday, April 24, as they travel to Thousand Oaks to face Cal
Lutheran.
