THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Whittier
College women's water polo team trailed 7-6 at intermission
of its game against Cal Lutheran but where outscored 8-4 in the
second half as the Regals held on for the 15-10 win on Saturday
morning.
The Poets (13-16, 2-5 SCIAC) turned to Sarah
Peel who made four saves in her second stint in goal for
the purple and gold this season.
Cal Lutheran jumped out to a 4-2 at the end of the first quarter
but the Poets climbed back into the game with a 4-3 second frame.
Whittier added three goals in the third quarter and one in the
fourth but it wasn't enough to keep pace with CLU's
five third-quarter goals.
Xenia Castillo scored one goal and dished out
five assists; Katina Thoreson and Veronica
Becerra each tallied five scores and Samantha
McCord pitched in with a pair of goals. Castillo added a
team-high five drawn ejections while Arianna
Weisenburger drew three.
The Poets will return to action next weekend as they take part
in the 2010 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
Championships hosted by Pomona-Pitzer. The first round is scheduled
for Friday, April 30.
