CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier College
women's water polo team held a 6-5 halftime lead over Cal
Lutheran in the first round of the 2010 Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference on Friday afternoon but was
held to just two second half scores as the Regals advanced to the
semifinals with a 12-8 win at Pomona-Pitzer.
Whittier (13-17) was led offensively by the duo of
Katrina Thoreson and Melissa
Reynoso who each scored a team-high two goals.
Veronica Becerra added three assists in the loss.
Cal Lutheran led 3-2 at the end of the first quarter but the
Poets went on a 4-2 run in the second stanza to hold the one-goal
advantage at the intermission. CLU scored four goals after the
break and Whittier added its only two goals of the second half in
the third quarter.
The Regals added three more goals in the final frame en route to
the four-goal win.
Anahisa Aguirre made seven saves between the
pipes for the Poets while Sara Wolff and
Arianna Weisenburger each had three steals.
Wolff, Sarah Peel, Xenia
Castillo and Weisenburger all had goals for the purple and
gold. Castillo and Thoreson each added three drawn ejections to
their stat lines.
The Poets will face La Verne in the second round of the
tournament, tomorrow, at 10 am.
