Whittier crushes La Verne in SCIAC second round

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier College women's water polo team will play for fifth place tomorrow afternoon as they defeated the University of La Verne, 17-7, in the second round of the 2010 SCIAC Tournament on Saturday morning.

Whittier took an early 6-2 lead after one quarter and exploded for an eight-goal second frame to put the game out of reach.

Katrina Thoreson scored a team-high five goals while Arianna Weisenburger and Samantha McCord each had a hat trick.

Whittier was held scoreless in the third quarter but added three more scores in the final frame en route to the 10-goal win.

Sarah Peel returned to goal for the purple and gold and made eight saves in the win. Xenia Castillo chipped in on the defensive end of the pool with three steals. She also added two goals and a drawn ejection.

Weisenburger and McCord each had three assists as well.
