CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier College
women's water polo team finished in sixth place at the 2010
Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament
as Redlands defeated the Poets, 12-7, in the fifth place game on
Sunday afternoon.
Whittier (14-18, 3-7 SCIAC) finished the regular season in sixth
place and its 1-2 record at the conference championships keeps them
in sixth.
Redlands led virtually the entire game and held a slim two-goal
lead at the end of each the first and second quarters. The Bulldogs
went up 3-1 at the end of one and led 5-3 at the intermission.
The Poets saw its deficit increase to three goals at the end of
the three and a 3-1 fourth quarter in favor of Redlands led to the
five-goal win for the Bulldogs.
Samantha McCord scored a team-high three goals
while Xenia Castillo, Arianna
Weisenburger, Katrina Thoreson and
Veronica Becerra all had one goal. Castillo (5)
and Weisenburger (4) combined to draw nine ejections and had two
steals each.
Becerra added two steals on the defensive end of the pool and
Sarah Peel made eight saves between the pipes.
