WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier women's tennis team earned its fifth straight victory Friday afternoon as it defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Occidental, 7-2, at the Ettinger Tennis Courts.
The Poets (6-6, 4-2 SCIAC) led 3-0 after an impressive doubles showing and wasted little time clinching the match.
Kady Oliker won her fifth individual match in as many outings and Adrienne Hamada officially won the match for the purple and gold with a straight set win at No. 2 singles. Oliker won at the fourth position, 6-1, 6-0.
With the win, Hamada's individual season record is 6-6 with a 3-3 mark in conference play.
Although the match was in hand, Chloe Dredge won her fifth straight singles match at the third position, 6-0, 7-5.
Brianna Campanero was the last off the court but the wait was worth it as she outlasted Occidental's Julie Housman in three sets. Campanero came back from a 6-4 first-set loss to win the next two sets 7-5, 10-8.
At the No. 5 position, Maryrose Vigorita faced a 1-0 deficit after losing the first set, 6-4, but rebounded to force the third-set with a 6-2 win in the second. Despite the rally, her comeback fell short as she lost 10-8.
Liliana Serylo had her hands full at the top spot with the No. 13 ranked player in the West Region. Krishnaveni Subbiah defeated Serylo in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.
Doubles went smoothly for the Poets who won at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions, 8-2, each, respectively. The team of Oliker and Dredge gave Whittier a 3-0 advantage with an 8-5 win at the second position.
The Poets will wrap up its regular season tomorrow morning as it hosts Redlands at 10 am.
