THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Arianna Weisenburger scored with 17 seconds left in the first overtime period as the Whittier women's water polo team snapped its five-game losing skid with a 10-9 win over Cal Lutheran.
Weisenburger and Katrina Thoreson tallied hat tricks while Veronica Becerra added a pair of goals in the win.
Whittier (9-12, 1-0 SCIAC) faced a 4-1 halftime deficit but outscored the Regals 5-2 in the third quarter to tie the score at 6-6.
Weisenburger scored the first goal of the third quarter at the 7:12 mark, Thoreson scored her second of the afternoon with 5:31 left and Sara Wolff knotted the score at 4-4 with her lone goal of the game at the 4:32 mark.
CLU ended the 3-0 run just 11 seconds later to push its lead to 5-4 but Melissa Reynoso recorded her only goal of the game 21 seconds later. Each team scored one more goal in the third stanza. Thoreson capped the third frame with her third of the day at the 34 second mark.
Whittier claimed its first lead of the day 1:12 into the fourth quarter on a goal from Becerra and led 8-6 after Weisenburger scored with 6:03 left in regulation.
Cal Lutheran scored two straight to even the score at 8-8 before Weisenburger scored with 1:06 left to put the Poets ahead. The Regals forced overtime with 44 seconds left on the clock.
Whittier returns to action on Wednesday, April 6, as it faces Claremont-M-S at 5 pm.
