PASADENA, Calif. – The Whittier women's tennis team swept through singles as it cruised to an 8-1 win over Caltech in the second round of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships.
The Poets (7-8, 5-4 SCIAC) bounced back from its upset loss to Cal Lutheran in the opening round by taking a 2-1 lead into singles.
Chloe Dredge and Kady Oliker continued their strong play at No. 2 doubles with an 8-3 win while the No. 3 duo of Lauren Gelgur and Maryrose Vigorita won convincingly, 8-0.
Oliker kept the momentum rolling with a straight-set sweep at the fifth position and Liliana Serylo and Adrienne Hamada came back from a loss at No. 1 doubles to win and the clinch the match at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively.
Hamada was the second off the courts with a 6-2, 6-2, win and Serylo gave the purple and gold the win with a 6-2, 6-3, win at the top spot.
Dredge pushed her individual win streak to seven matches with a 6-2, 6-2, win, Vigorita got in the win column with a 6-3, 6-2, win and Gelgur rounded out the scoring with a 4-6, 7-5, 10-5, victory.
With the win, the Poets are guaranteed no worse than a .500 record in conference play. Last year, Whittier finished with a 3-7 mark in SCIAC matches.
The fourth-seeded Poets will look to finish in fifth place as it takes on No. 6 seed Occidental at 10 am tomorrow morning.
