THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Whittier women's tennis team picked up the biggest tennis win in Whittier College history Saturday morning as they uprooted the Regals of Cal Lutheran University 6-3.
The Poets (5-6, 3-2) are now above .500 within SCIAC for the first time in school history and looks like they are clicking on all cylinders as they have now rattled off four straight matches.
Whittier jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after doubles and made their presence known. The No. 2 team of Kady Oliker and Chloe Dredge set the tone for the Poets as they won the first point for the Poets 8-3. The No. 3 team of Lauren Gelgur and Maryrose Vigorita followed with an 8-4 win.
Then with little time to waste the No. 1 team of Adrienne Hamada and Liliana Serylo clinched the third point for the Poets as they won 8-6.
With the thought of the biggest upset in Whittier College history looming in the heads of the lady Poets, they came out poised and focused and won 3-of-6 singles matches to clinch the victory.
Dredge clinched the win for the Poets at No. 3 as she rallied to win 6-4, 7-5 moving her record to 7-4 on the season, while Serylo cruised to an easy 6-3, 6-1 win at the top spot.
But the match of the day belonged to Oliker at the No. 5 position who with the match in hand fought to force a third set tiebreak and was able to pull out her fourth win in a row claiming victory 4-6, 7-5, 10-5.
The Poets return to action as they host the Bulldogs of the University of Redlands Saturday, April 16, at 10 am.
