WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College women's water polo team erupted for fifteen goals from twelve different players and held Macalester to four goals Sunday afternoon at the Lillian Slade Aquatic Center in a 15-4 victory moving their record to 7-9.
Whittier who was coming off of a 2-2 record from the Claremont Convergence the previous two days came out strongly despite only going into the half up 4-2. The Poets opened up the scoring with a quick goal from Katrina Thoreson at the 5:36 mark and then added a second goal from Melissa Reynoso two minutes later. But Macalester didn't go away and added a late goal to cut the deficit to one.
Coming out in the second Macalester tied up the game with a goal in the first minute but saw Whittier add goals in the fourth and fifth minute from Hayley Parker and Samantha Pudwill that extended the Whittier lead to two at the break.
Coming out of intermission the Poets erupted for seven goals in the third from seven different players, which included Laurel Pinkley, Reynoso, Arianna Weisenburger, Katie Vazquez, Kirsten Davis, Jae Crabtree, and Sara Mullins. This lead gave the Poets a demanding 11-3 advantage heading into the final frame.
In the last quarter head coach Justin Pudwill put goalie Mattie Winkler into the game but as a field player trying to see if she could gather a goal but she was unable to but saw Natalie Halvorsen-Herrera tack on two goals and Mullins and Alexandria Talley add goals themselves to close the game out keeping Macalester at bay. Macalester added one last goal in the final frame but it wasn't enough as Whittier went on to win 15-4.
The Poets continue their home stand at the Lillian Slade Aquatic Center tomorrow, March 12 as they host Harvard and the Virginia Military Institute with games slated for 3pm and 6pm, each respectively.
