WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College
women's tennis team for the second straight match fell by the score
of 5-4 losing Saturday morning to the Regals of Cal Lutheran
University on Senior Day.
Whittier finishes the regular season 8-9, 2-5 SCIAC, while Cal
Lutheran improves to 11-7, 4-3 SCIAC.
The Poets finish the regular season in 6th place
ahead of Occidental and Caltech but have their sights set for the
SCIAC Championships set to take place on May 4 and 5 where they can
avenge their losses to both La Verne and Cal Lutheran.
The Poets recognized their four seniors who were playing in
their final home game of the regular season. These players
included Kady
Oliker, Maryrose
Vigorita, Katie
Davidson, andRachel
Aelion-Moss .
The Purple & Gold jumped out in front after doubles 2-1
after the No. 2 team of Rachel
Sugiyama and Adrienne
Hamada cruised to the 8-2 victory to get the Poets on
the scoreboard first. Immediately following their win the No.
3 team of Oliker and Benay
Weintraub grabbed the second point for the Poets
cruising to an 8-3 victory.
But again for the second straight match Whittier dropped four of
six singles to lose their advantage and eventually the match.
Sophomore Liliana
Serylo looks to have found her groove on the court at
No. 1 as she came from behind to beat Kim Kolibas in three sets
4-6, 7-5, 6-4 breaking her six match losing streak.
Fellow sophomore Chloe
Dredge who was riding a four match winning streak in
singles coming into today's contest was unable to pull off the
victory at No. 2 despite jumping out in front early in both sets
only to fall in two tiebreakers 7-6 (1), 7-6 (2).
Hamada who continues to play good tennis again for the second
straight day won both her doubles and singles matches again winning
today at No. 3 singles 6-4, 6-2 earning her eighth victory of the
season and her second straight.
Senior Oliker battled at No. 4 despite being hampered with an
ankle injury but forced a third set by taking the second set
6-1. But in the third set her opponent Baker was able to
crawl back to win a lopsided set 6-1.
