LA VERNE, Calif. – The Whittier College women's water polo team earned their third straight victory and their second straight Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win Wednesday afternoon as they held on for the 7-4 victory over the Leopards of the University of La Verne.
Whittier opened up the SCIAC contest with a goal from Laurel Pinkley but saw the Leopards rally to knot the game at two at the end of the first frame. But the Poets came out in the second holding the Leos to just one goal, while adding two more themselves to go into the break up 4-3.
La Verne opened up the second half with a goal that evened the game at four but that's as close as they would get as the Purple & Gold would add a late goal to take a 5-4 advantage after three quarters of play before holding the Leopards scoreless in the final quarter, while tacking on two insurance goals that propelled them to the 7-4 victory.
Whittier received three goals on the afternoon from Pinkley, two goals from Jae Crabtree, and a goal from Monique Dorado and Cynthia Castillo.
The Poets return to the pool this weekend on Saturday, March 30 when they travel to Redlands to take on the Bulldogs with game time set for 11:00am.
