WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College women's water polo team remains unbeaten in SCIAC play and has won their fourth straight contest after defeating the Bulldogs of the University of Redlands 2-1 Saturday morning in what was a defensive battle from start to finish.
In the lowest scoring game of the season, the Purple & Gold managed to hold the high powered Redlands offense to just one goal during the game, which came in the second period. Earlier in the season the Poets dropped an 11-5 decision to the Bulldogs but got their revenge this afternoon getting two goals in the second half that propelled them to the one goal victory.
After a scoreless opening frame, Redlands managed to add the first goal of the game at the 1:49 mark in the second capitalizing off of an exclusion to go into the break up 1-0. Out of intermission the Poets found their offense late in the third quarter after Alyssa Rangel found the back of the goal that evened the game up at one.
Then to open up the fourth Whittier struck again with the eventual game winner at the 6:02 mark when Sabrina Carlile countered off of a Redlands turnover that gave the Poets their first lead of the game. Despite having two looks on goal with two man up situations in the final 3:30 the Bulldogs were unable to answer as the Poet defense stood strong preserving the one goal victory.
Whittier looks to extend their winning streak as they host both Cal Lutheran and Occidental this week in the friendly confines of the Lillian Slade Aquatic Center. The Poets host the Regals on Wednesday, April 3 with game time set for 5:00pm before taking on the Tigers on Saturday, April 6 at 11:00am.
