CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier College women's water polo team saw their six game winning streak come to a close Wednesday evening as they fell 10-7 to Pomona-Pitzer dropping their SCIAC record to 5-1.
The Poets who were coming off of a big 9-6 victory over Occidental on Saturday to remain unbeaten in conference action saw the Sagehens hold a 7-4 lead at the break before holding on for the three goal victory late.
Whittier was led on offense by Laurel Pinkley and Alyssa Rangel who each tallied two goals apiece. The Purple & Gold saw themselves down 4-3 after one quarter of play and despite Jae Crabtree finding the back of the goal at the 3:37 mark to pull the Poets within one at 5-4, the Sagehens managed to gather two more goals from Sarah Westcott and Mahalia Prater-Fahey to extend their lead at the break.
PP opened up the scoring in the second half from Alyssa Woodward to make the score 8-4 and despite outscoring Pomona 2-1 in the final quarter, Whittier was only able to pull within three that allowed the Sagehens to pull off the victory.
Other goals from Whittier came from Monique Dorado and Hayley Parker, while junior goalie Mattie Winkler tallied seven saves in the loss.
Whittier continues with SCIAC play this Saturday, April 13 when they travel to Claremont, Calif. to take on the Athena's of Claremont-M-S beginning at 4:00pm.
