WHITTIER, Calif. – Playing without No. 1 Meagan Zamilpa who was out due to an illness, the Whittier College women's tennis team was forced to move around their starting lineup ultimately being edged 5-4 to Bates College dropping to 1-3 on the season.
Liliana Serylo and Benay Weintraub got things started for the Purple & Gold cruising to the 8-2 doubles victory at No. 2. But Bates responded taking No. 3 8-4 evening the match at one. At No. 1, senior Adrienne Hamada partnered with freshman Gabi Etchegaray and despite holding an early break, the Poets saw the Bobcats come back to pull off the 9-7 victory taking a 2-1 lead into singles.
Hamada and Etchegaray were edged at the top two spots falling 6-4, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-3, respectively before Eleanor Hough clinched the match for Bates at No. 6 earning a 7-5, 6-0 victory over freshman Terianne Hamada.
Whittier three victories came at No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5. Alexis Agustin continues to have a strong year as a freshman earning her third victory of the season earing the Poets their second point winning 6-2, 6-1 over Olivia Voccola. She was followed by Weintraub who put together a straight sets victory 6-3, 6-2 over Kate Rosenthal at No. 4. Trailing by one 4-3, Serylo stepped up at No. 3 earning her biggest win of the season defeating Kristen Doerer in three sets that evened the match at four. She dropped the opening set 7-5 but came back to win in straight sets 6-1, 6-3.
The Poets return to the courts next week as they host Villanova on Monday, March 3 beginning at 2:30pm.
