CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier College women's basketball team had no answer for sophomore forward Jenn Okonkwo Thursday evening who totaled a doubled double of 28 points and 18 rebounds for the Sagehens in the 83-60 victory.
The previous time these two programs met back on January 11, Okonkwo was out due to an injury but the Sagehens still managed to pull off a double-digit victory 65-45.
This marks the Poets sixth straight loss as they fall to 1-19, 1-10 SCIAC.
Junior point guard Dannika Navales-Lugtu (San Francisco, Calif.) had a breakout game finishing with a season high 26 points on 10-17 shooting, which included four three pointers. She also collected six rebounds and had two assists.
Kaylah Alexander (Altoona, PA) was the only other Poet in double figures as she finished with 12 points coupled with eight boards and two steals.
Pomona-Pitzer led 40-26 at the break and then extended their lead to 50-33 with 16:35 left to play before Whittier would mount a comeback pulling within nine 50-41 capped off with a Navales-Lugtu jumper. But the Sagehens responded answering with a 7-0 run pushing the lead back to double digits 57-41 before securing the victory.
Joining Okonkwo in double figures was Basha Brulee-Willis who collected a double double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Alaina Woo came off the bench to chip in with 11 points and five assists.
Whittier returns home this Saturday, February 8 as they host Chapman University beginning at 7:00pm during the annual Play 4Kay Event.
