LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Whittier College women's tennis team earned their first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory sweeping the Tigers of Occidental College in impressive fashion 9-0.
The Poets surrendered a mere two games in doubles winning 8-1, 8-1, 8-0. They then carried it over into singles led by Adrienne Hamada at No. 2 who cruised to the 6-0, 6-0 victory over Jessie Hernandez. She was followed by freshman Gabi Etchegaray who won in straights 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 before the bottom trio of Poets clinched the match winning 6-0, 6-2 (Liliana Serylo, No. 4), 6-0, 6-2 (Alexis Agustin, No. 5), and 6-1, 6-3 (Ava Egan, No. 6).
The test laid at No. 1 where Meagan Zamilpa ran into a grind with Nola Bonis-Ericksen going three sets. After dropping the first 7-5, Zamilpa came back to win 6-2 in the second and eventually the third set super tiebreaker 11-9 to keep the clean sweep intact.
