THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Whittier College women's tennis team moved back over .500 Saturday morning as they cruised to the 6-3 victory over Cal Lutheran University improving to 8-7, 2-2 SCIAC.
Despite dropping at No. 3 doubles 8-4, Whittier came out ahead 2-1 winning at No. 1 and No. 2 from Meagan Zamilpa/Adrienne Hamada and Liliana Serylo/Gabi Etchegaray.
In singles the Poets took four of six matches led by Zamilpa who cruised past Lindsay Murphy 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1. She was joined by Benay Weintraub at No. 5 who bounced back after doubles to win convincingly 6-1, 6-0 over Shelby Kubota.
Etchegaray earned a first set 6-3 over Rebecca Gold at No. 3 but then exchanged five match point opportunities in the second before hitting a drop shot winner to take the set and the match 7-6 (10).
Hamada ran into a test at No. 2 with Daria Karakouka dropping the opening set 6-3 but managed to come back to take the next two 6-2, 6-4 giving the Poets their sixth point on the afternoon.
Whittier remains on the road this Friday, April 4 when they travel to Orange, Calif. to take on No. 26 Chapman University with match time set for 2:00pm.
