Poets knock off No. 25 UC Santa Cruz; Sweep Mills College

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – The Whittier College women's tennis team wrapped up a strong trip to Santa Cruz this weekend knocking off No. 25 UC Santa Cruz 5-4 the first time a women's tennis squad has knocked off a Top 30 opponent in the program's history.

Whittier then followed that performance up with a clean 9-0 sweep over Mills College improving to 3-4 on the season and looking for a chance to crack into the ITA National Top 30 when the new polls are released.

Women's tennis remains in non-conference action this Wednesday, March 12 when they host Texas-Tyler beginning at 6:00pm.    

UC Santa Cruz (W, 5-4)

After losses at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, Whittier's Benay Weintraub and Alexis Agustin came up big at No. 3 giving the Poets their first point on the morning winning 8-3.

In singles, sophomore Meagan Zamilpa put together one of her best performances of the season sweeping No. 34 Alexandra Scotten in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, which ignited the bottom portion of the lineup. 

Agustin jumped out of the gates quickly at No. 6 winning her first set 6-1 and kept her foot on the gas pedal taking the second 6-1 as well before Weintraub grabbed the fourth point for the Poets winning 6-4, 6-0 at No. 5 over Monika Prokes. 

At No. 4, Liliana Serylo found herself in a battle with Danielle Caro winning 6-4, 7-6 (3), which clinched the victory for the Poets, prior to freshman Gabi Etchegaray falling in three sets at No. 3 against Katy Collins after fighting from behind being down a set and 5-2.

Mills College (W, 9-0)

Whittier took on Mills College in the nightcap of their doubleheader and surrendered just 15 games in nine sets sparked by a clean sweep in doubles 8-0, 8-0, 8-0.

They continued their dominance in singles as Zamilpa rolled to the 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 1 followed by a 6-0, 6-0 performance from Adrienne Hamada at No. 2.

In a shift in singles, three freshmen and a sophomore entered the starting lineup.  Terianne Hamada moved into the No. 3 spot winning 7-5, 6-2, Ava Egan went to No. 4 winning 6-0, 6-1, Alissa Fa at No. 5 won 6-4, 6-0, and Ruthie Kaplan played No. 6 and won 6-1, 6-1.
