REDLANDS, Calif. – The Whittier College women's tennis team ran into a tough road contest last week as they fell 9-0 to No. 17 University of Redlands dropping to .500 on the season at 9-9, 3-4 SCIAC.
Despite two tight doubles matches at No. 2 and No. 3 the Bulldogs were able to come away with a clean sweep winning 8-3, 8-5, 8-5.
Trailing by three, and playing without No. 1 singles player Meagan Zamilpa who was out due to an injury the Poets were no match for UR as they were swept at all six singles positions. Freshman Gabi Etchegaray had the match of the day taking on Ceara Sumida at No. 3 and after taking the first set 6-3, was unable to pull it out as Sumida came back to win 6-0, 10-8 keeping the clean sweep intact.
Freshmen Ava Egan and Terianne Hamada moved into the starting lineup at No. 5 and No. 6 but couldn't come away with a victory totaling a mere three games combined.
Adrienne Hamada moved up to No. 1 against Jessica Ly but found herself down early en route to falling 6-1, 6-2.
