WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College women's water polo team saw their three game winning streak come to a close Wednesday evening as they were stunned by the Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer 7-6 at the Lillian Slade Aquatic Center dropping from the SCIAC unbeatens.
Whittier drops to 19-14, 4-1 SCIAC, while Pomona-Pitzer improves to 17-13, 3-1 SCIAC.
Claremont-M-S is the lone SCIAC team who is undefeated on the season at 5-0 with Whittier and Pomona-Pitzer chasing each with one loss. The SCIAC Champion is determined by a point system that combines the regular season and the SCIAC Tournament, and any team within two games of first place controls its own destiny for the league title.
The first quarter was played to a 1-1 draw with the Poets opening up the frame with a score from Jae Crabtree. Pomona-Pitzer would go out in front 3-1 with two quick goals in the second until Cynthia Castillo would cut the deficit to one with a goal at the 2:24 mark.
Out of the half Arlin De La Mora would tie the game up at three two and a half minutes in, but the Sagehens would close out the quarter with back to back goals to go in the final quarter up 5-3.
Whittier put together a nice push to wrap up the game with three goals from Laurel Pinkley and Jasmine Villalpando (2) to pull within one 7-6 and after getting the ball back with 1:29 to play and a man-up situation they couldn't capitalize allowing Pomona-Pitzer to escape with the upset victory.
Whittier remains at home this Saturday, April 12 as they host Claremont-M-S at 11:00am on Senior Day.
