CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier College women's tennis team wrapped up the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championships Sunday but fell 7-2 in the 5th place match against Chapman University.
The Panthers used five singles victories all in straight sets en route to the lopsided win. The Poets fell behind early 2-1 after doubles getting a big win from Liliana Serylo and Benay Weintraub who won their third consecutive doubles match during the Championships that kept the match close.
In singles, Whittier saw No. 1 Meagan Zamilpa pull out due to a foot injury forcing everyone to move up a spot. The lone win came at No. 4 from Weintraub who put together her best match of the season beating Madeline Saunders 6-3, 6-3. Gabi Etchegaray at No. 3 had an opportunity against Sophia Duong but a break in each set would give the victory to CU 6-4, 6-4.
Whittier finishes the season 10-12, 4-7 SCIAC and looks to have Zamilpa earn a spot in the NCAA Championships in singles set to take place at Claremont-M-S at the end of the month, May 22-24.
