WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College women's tennis team ended a ten match losing skid Saturday as they powered past UC Santa Cruz 7-2 on the Richard Ettinger Tennis Courts.
The Poets opened with a dominating performance in doubles sweeping the competition. Freshman Jada Henry (Oceanside, Calif.) teamed up with sophomore Terianne Hamada (Mililani, HI) at No. 2 winning 8-3 over Islay Fossett and Sylvia Brummitt. Meagan Zamilpa (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) and Gabi Etchegaray (Placentia, Calif.) finished next at No. 1 cruising 8-4 over Courtney Lymburner and Katy Collins and the No. 3 team of Benay Weintraub (Memphis, TN) and Ruthie Kaplan (Coto De Caza) edged out Zoe Middleton-Brook and Soph Lundeberg 8-6.
The Purple & Gold continued in singles taking four of six matches. No. 41 Zamilpa made quick work of Lymburner 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 and Weintraub followed with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 over Brummitt that clinched the victory. Etchegaray at No. 2 followed sweeping Lundeberg 6-1, 6-3 and Henry stormed past Collins at No. 4 6-1, 6-2.
The two losses came at No. 5 and No. 6 but both came in three sets. Hamada, at No. 5 dropped the first set 6-2 to Fossett but came back to win the second 6-1 before falling 11-9 in the ten point tiebreaker.
Kaplan, at No. 6 after taking the first set 6-2 dropped the second 6-0 before falling 11-9 in the breaker.
Whittier returns to action this Wednesday, March 25 when they host Kalamazoo in their final non-conference match-up. Match slated to begin at 4:00pm.
