WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College women's water polo team put together and impressive showing Wednesday afternoon at the Lillian Slade Aquatic Center as they rolled to the lopsided 19-8 victory over Occidental College.
With the win the Poets snap a four game losing skid and improve to 14-12, 2-0 SCIAC, while Occidental drops to 1-18, 0-2 SCIAC.
Eight different Poets scored on the afternoon with five coming from Jenel Rivera (Whittier, Calif.).
The Purple & Gold went up quickly 2-0 with tallies from Arlin De La Mora (Commerce, Calif.) and Isabella Gorrocino (East Los Angeles, Calif.). But on the next two possessions for the Tigers they would respond tying the game up at 2-2 at the 3:58 mark in the first quarter.
But that would be the closest the Tigers would get as Zyania Morales (Los Angeles, Calif.), Rivera, and Angelica Hernandez would add four in a row that moved the score to 6-2.
De La Mora and Kendyl Riley (Huntington Beach, Calif.) would add the first two in the second quarter that extended the lead to six and from there the Poets continued rolling leading 8-3 at the break, 12-7 at the end of the third before scoring five in the final stanza that sent them to the 19-8 win.
De La Mora and Cynthia Castillo (Los Angeles, Calif.) each added three goals, Hernandez had two along with Riley and Caitlin Bronzan (Brentwood, Calif.) in goal finished with four saves.
Whittier has a bye this Saturday as they look forward to the much needed rest as they prepare for a SCIAC showdown next Wednesday, April 1 with Pomona-Pitzer on the road beginning at 7:00pm.
