CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier College women's tennis team returned to conference action Friday afternoon and Saturday morning looking to extend their winning streak to four but ran into a tough Pomona-Pitzer squad that swept 9-0 before dropping an 8-1 decision to the Athena's of Claremont-M-S.
The Sagehens jumped out in front quickly sweeping doubles 8-4, 8-1, 8-4. They continued to roll in singles as they earned all straight set victories giving up a combined 11 games. The closest the Poets got to earning a point was at No. 5 from freshman Jada Henry (Oceanside, Calif.) who totaled five games in a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Marie Fleming.
The No. 1 duo of Meagan Zamilpa (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) and Gabi Etchegaray (Placentia, Calif.) continue to roll in doubles this season knocking off the No. 1 team in the West Region from CMS Caroline Ward and Katie Kuosman 9-8 (4) but that would be the lone victory on the day. Zamilpa had a tight match with No. 40 Kuosman at No. 1 but ultimately fell 6-2, 6-2.
