CLAREMONT, Calif. – Inapremier conference match-up of the season, the Whittier College Poets and Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens faced off Wednesday evening in a No. 1 vs. No. 2 match-up but in the end PP came away victorious earning a 13-7 victory.
With the win PP remains undefeated in conference play at 3-0, while Whittier drops to 14-13, 2-1 SCIAC.
The Sagehens used a late run to pull away from Whittier, which included the final five goals of the game, with four coming in the fourth quarter.
The Poets fell behind 2-0 in the first four minutes of the game. Cynthia Castillo (East Los Angeles, Calif.) cut the deficit to one at the 3:27 mark and Isabella Gorrocino (Commerce, Calif.) would end the quarter with :36 seconds on the clock that moved the score to 3-2.
Jenel Rivera (Whittier, Calif.) was the only Poet to find the back of the net in the second and Whittier still found themselves trailing 5-3 at the break.
Out of the half the Poets would find their offense with three goals from Arlin De La Mora (Commerce, Calif.) and Zyania Morales (Commerce, Calif.) that cut the deficit to one 7-6. After Hope Grant scored a transition goal at the 5:01 mark, Morales scored her second of the game a minute later that brought the Poets within 8-7, giving the two teams a combined seven goals in the first four minutes of the second half.
On the very next possession, Mahalia Prater-Fahey would put the Sagehens back up by two and Whittier wouldn't be able to connect after that being held scoreless in the final eight minutes.
Caitlin Bronzan (Brentwood, Calif.) finished with eight saves in goal, while Ahsha Earwood totaled eight for PP.
Whittier returns to the pool this Saturday, April 4 as they host Cal Lutheran University beginning at 11:00am.
