THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Whittier College women's tennis team attempted to spoil Cal Lutheran's Senior Day but couldn't overcome a 2-1 deficit as they fell 6-3 at Poulson Tennis Center.
No. 2 and No. 3 doubles dropped both matches quickly to put the Poets in a hole early 2-0 but Meagan Zamilpa (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) and Gabi Etchegaray (Placentia, Calif.) would put WC on the scoreboard winning 8-2 over Shelby Kubota and Mallory Kenny at No. 1.
Whittier found themselves in an even bigger hole after losses at No. 5 and No. 6 singles that moved the score to 4-1. Zamilpa gave the Poets their second point winning 6-3, 6-0 over Kenny that cut the deficit in half and Benay Weintraub (Memphis, TN) kept the rally going winning a big three set match with Rebecca Gold at No. 2 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 that pulled the Purple & Gold within one.
Etchegaray took the first set in her match against Emily Werman at No. 3 6-4 but couldn't pull it off as she would drop the next two 6-2, 6-4 that gave the decisive point to the Regals.
In the last match on, Jada Henry (Oceanside, Calif.) would find herself up a set after pulling off the first set breaker 7-6 (4) and like Etchegaray couldn't hold on as she would drop the next two frames 6-2, 6-3.
