WHITTIER, Calif. – Junior Meagan Zamilpa (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) remains hot in singles competition as she earned yet another win at No. 1 but it wouldn't be enough to spark the upset over No. 33 Chapman University as the Whittier College women's tennis team fell 7-2.
Starting off the match down 2-0 due to forfeiting No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles the Poets were forced to play catch-up. Zamilpa and Gabi Etchegaray (Placentia, Calif.) after knocking off the No. 1 team from CMS was unable to get into a rhythm as they fell 8-4 to Andrea Hammer and Rachel Fox.
At No. 2, Benay Weintraub (Memphis, TN) and Ruthie Kaplan (Coto De Caza) put together a fight against Sophia Duong and Madeline Saunders but in the end they dropped their pro set 8-3 putting the Purple & Gold in a hole 4-0.
Moving into singles, Chapman clinched the match at No. 4 with Kaplan falling in straight sets. Etchegaray wasn't able to get past Fox at No. 2 who earned a 6-3, 6-2 win but the final two matches went towards Whittier.
Zamilpa fought against Duong at No. 1 sweeping 6-3, 7-5 to put the Poets on the scoreboard and Weintraub followed shortly after with her biggest win of her career beating No. 18 Hammer at No. 3 6-1, 2-6, 10-4.
Whittier returns to the courts this weekend as they travel to Thousand Oaks, Calif. this Saturday, April 11 with match-time set for 10:00am.
