WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College women's water polo team continues to roll through conference play as they used a big second half to route the Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer 14-9 at the Lillian Slade Aquatic Center.
The Poets continue to add to their already impressive season as they move to 17-7, 3-0 SCIAC winning four of their last five.
Whittier got off to a fast start with three unanswered from Zyania Morales (Commerce, Calif.), Cynthia Castillo (Los Angeles, Calif.), and Angelica Hernandez (Pico Rivera, Calif.) adding a man-up goal at the 6:11 mark.
Jenel Rivera (Whittier, Calif.) would add the fourth with under a minute to play in the quarter adding a touch lob over the goalie's outstretched hand as the shot clock was expiring helping WC take a 4-1 lead.
In the second, both teams added two goals apiece with Whittier maintaining a 6-3 advantage at the break.
But in the third, that's when the floodgates opened with the Purple & Gold outscoring the Sagehens 6-1 taking an impressive 12-4 lead. Hernandez added three goals during the spurt, while Morales, Isabella Gorrocino (East Los Angeles, Calif.), and Castillo would each add one.
In the fourth, the second and third teams played for Whittier getting quality playing time in as PP would find the back of the goal five times to pull within five but that's as close as they would get as WC would get goals from Gorrocino and Arlin De la Mora (Commerce, Calif.) that would keep the momentum with the Poets.
Caitlin Bronzan (Lakewood, Calif.) earned the victory finishing with six saves between the posts. Hernandez finished with four goals on the game and Gorrocino had three.
Whittier travels now for two games as they take on Cal Lutheran this Saturday, April 2 in Thousand Oaks, Calif. beginning at 11:00am before traveling to Claremont, Calif. next Wednesday, April 6 to play CMS with game time set for 7:00pm.
