WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College women's water polo team pounded the Bulldogs of the University of Redlands Wednesday evening 18-8 at the Lillian Slade Aquatic Center.
The Purple & Gold were in total control from start to finish improving to 12-3, 2-0 SCIAC.
Angelica Hernandez (Pico Rivera, Calif.) put the Poets up 2-0 and they didn't look back with Cynthia Castillo (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Isabella Gorrocino (East Los Angeles, Calif.) adding another two that put WC in front 4-1. In the second, UR fought back adding three goals, but again Whittier would pour in another four from Zyania Morales (Commerce, Calif.) (2), Castillo, and Hernandez that moved the score to 8-4 at the break.
The Poets put together their largest single quarter offensive output of the season in the third finding the back of the goal seven times from five different players that put the game out of reach. Morales and Hernandez each had two during the run and Castillo, Jenel Rivera (Whittier, Calif.), and Lindsay Shoaff (Costa Mesa, Calif.) would each add one that made the score 15-6.
Redlands would add another two in the final quarter to hit the eight goal mark but they had no answer for the Purple & Gold offensive onslaught as Morales, Jasmine Villalpando (Commerce, Calif.), and Celeste Moreira (Downey, Calif.) would secure the lopsided victory with another three strikes in the final eight minutes.
Caitlin Bronzan (Brentwood, Calif.) picked up another victory finishing five saves, while Katia Montoya (Riverside, Calif.) registered four.
Morales and Hernandez each finished with five goals for the game, while Castillo had three.
Whittier returns to action next weekend, March 18-19 as they take part in the LMU Zumo Invite. Here they will take on San Jose State (March 18 @ 10:15am), Princeton (March 18 @ 12:45pm), Virginia Military Institute (March 19 @ 9:15am), and Cal State Northridge (March 19 @ 2:15pm).
