THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Whittier College women's water polo team kept their winning streak intact Saturday morning as they cruised past Cal Lutheran University at the Samuelson Aquatics Center 14-9.
The win marks the Poets fourth straight victory as they move to 18-7 and remain perfect in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play at 4-0.
Zyania Morales (Commerce, Calif.) and Jenel Rivera (Whittier, Calif.) got the Poets on the scoreboard in the first four minutes of the first quarter putting the Purple & Gold on top 3-0.
Anastacia Gonzalez (Montebello, Calif.) would add the Poets fourth goal at the 3:04 mark coming on a man-up and Angelica Hernandez (Pico Rivera, Calif.) would seal the first quarter with another strike that made the score 5-1.
In the second, the Regals made a push with the first two goals to cut the deficit to two but Whittier's Rivera would answer with another two goals that pushed the lead back to three. Morales would add her second of the game with 2:13 left in the half helping give WC an 8-5 lead at the break.
The third quarter was all Purple & Gold as they would outscore CLU 6-1 that opened the game up 14-6. Morales and Hernandez would each add two goals during the run.
Despite CLU adding three in the final eight minutes, it wouldn't be enough as Whittier would roll to the five goal victory.
Caitlin Bronzan (Brentwood, Calif.) finished with five saves in goal and Katia Montoya (Riverside, Calif.) had three.
Morales and Rivera each registered four goals apiece, while Hernandez chipped in with three.
Whittier remains on the road this upcoming Wednesday, April 6 as they travel to Claremont-M-S for a match-up with the Athena's beginning at 7:00pm.
