REDLANDS, Calif. – The Whittier College Football team faced a tough match-up with the University of Redlands Saturday evening as they fell 76-7 at Ted Runner Stadium.

The 76 points and 666 yards allowed is a program record as the Poets were held to a mere 285 yards of total offense and they still remain winless on the season as they drop to 0-7, 0-5 SCIAC.

Turnovers proved costly for the Purple & Gold and proved a major factor in the loss.  Miguel Avina (Indio, Calif.) had a season low 139 yards passing on 11-27 attempts with three picks.  He also carried the ball 13 times for 42 yards, with a long being of 20.

Junior transfer Chance Trammell (Chico, Calif.) was a bright spot for the Poets as he carried the ball 19 times for 79 yards averaging 4.2 yards per rush along with a score.  His touchdown came in the 4th quarter, which broke up the shutout.  He capped off a 7-play, 72-yard drive with an eight-yard scamper.

Whittier added 285 yards total, which included 139 yards in the air and 146 rushing.  Brian Phelan (Chino Hills, Calif.) was the Poets leading receiver with three catches for 48 yards, averaging 16 yards per catch.  But the Poets found it difficult all night to move the ball as they were shutout over the first quarters, while going 2 of 12 (17%) on third down completions.

On the defensive side, Nicholas Markarian (Chino Hills, Calif.) led the Poets with 14 tackles (4 solo/10 assist) and was joined in double digits by Cooper Allen (Visalia, Calif.) (7 solo/4 assist).  Three Poets had six tackles apiece, which included Oscar Aliaga (Las Vegas, NV), Darius Anthony (Santa Clarita, Calif.), and Elyas Armstrong (Inglewood, Calif.), while WC totaled two sacks on the night.

Whittier wraps up their 2017 season this Saturday, November 11 against the University of La Verne on the road beginning at 1:00pm.
