WHITTIER, Calif – Division I Brown University came away with the 6-5 victory Tuesday evening at the Lillian Slade Aquatic Center as they held off the Whittier College Women's Water Polo team.
In a highly contested match-up, the Purple & Gold were unable to complete the comeback as they drop to 10-14, 2-0 SCIAC.
It was a low scoring affair, which kept the fans on the edge of their seats throughout. Isabella Gorrocino (East Los Angeles, Calif.) added the first goal for the Poets as they trailed 3-1 after the first quarter.
The Bears managed only one connection in the second but held the Poets scoreless as they went into the half leading 4-1.
In the third, a combined three goals were added as Jenel Rivera (Whittier, Calif.) got into the scoring category but the Poets still saw themselves trailing at 6-2.
In the final period the comeback began as Whittier outscored the Bears 3-0 with Rivera and Zyania Morales (Commerce, Calif.) going back to back early and Gorrocino pulling WC within one at the 3:20 mark capitalizing on a man-up.
It then came down to the final minute of the game as Whittier came away with big stops on defense allowing them to have one final look for the equalizer. But the last second shot would come after the buzzer as Brown was able to escape with the one goal victory.
Katia Montoya (Riverside, Calif.) played all 32:00 finishing with six saves between the posts, while Gorrocino and Rivera each added two goals.
Whittier turns right around and returns to their Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) schedule this afternoon, March 29 as they travel to take on Cal Lutheran University beginning at 4:00pm.
