LA VERNE, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Water Polo team has found their way into the semi-finals of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championships for the fourth consecutive year as they rolled Occidental College 15-7 Friday afternoon.
The top seeded Poets will face-off against No. 4 Cal Lutheran University, tomorrow, Saturday, April 22 with game-time set for 12:30pm. The Regals held on for the one goal victory 9-8 over No. 5 Claremont-M-S.
The Purple & Gold remain hot as they have now won eight straight improving to 18-14, 9-0 SCIAC and still keep their SCIAC winning streak intact at 20 games with their last loss coming back in 2015.
Whittier outscored the Tigers 5-1 in the first quarter and didn't look back as they took a 7-2 lead into the break before tacking on another eight in the second half en route to the lopsided victory.
Eight different Poets scored a goal in the contest led by freshman Hannah Rodriguez (Riverside, Calif.) who added four connections on six shots.
She was joined by San Diego State transfer Marina Daroca Bazan (Barcelona, Spain) who had her best game of the season with three goals and three assists, while Lindsay Shoaff (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Isabella Gorrocino (East Los Angeles, Calif.) tacked on two each.
Both Katia Montoya (Riverside, Calif.) and Caitlin Bronzan (Brentwood, Calif.) played in goal. Montoya finished with a couple saves and Bronzan with four.
Whittier controlled every category for the game. They outshot Oxy 22-20, was 4-8 on power plays and added a 5-meter penalty.
