LA VERNE, Calif. – The quest for a third straight Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championship for the Whittier College Women's Water Polo team fell short Sunday as they dropped a 9-3 decision to Pomona-Pitzer.
The loss snaps the Purple & Gold's nine-game winning streak this season and ends their streak of 20 straight SCIAC victories dating back to 2015. Whittier's season ends here in 2017 as they finish 19-15, 10-1 SCIAC.
It was a slow start for the Poets as they were held scoreless in the 1st quarter as the Sagehens led 2-0.
Jenel Rivera (Whittier, Calif.) got Whittier's first connection at the 6:08 mark in the 2nd frame but WC still found themselves trailing at the half 4-1.
Goals continued to be tough to come by in the second half as Whittier picked up another goal in the 3rd and 4th quarters. Zyania Morales (Commerce, Calif.) grabbed the Poets second tally and then added the final goal with 2:46 remaining in the game. But it wouldn't be enough as the Poets would allow five second half strikes from the Sagehens as they came away with the SCIAC Championship Title.
What proved critical in the game were power-plays where Whittier was 0-12, while being outshot 28-24.
In goal, Katia Montoya (Riverside, Calif.) played all 32:00 finishing with 10 saves.
