CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Basketball 2017-18 season came to a close Wednesday night as they fell 69-42 to Claremont-M-S seeing their quest for a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Post Season berth end.
Whittier finished the season 5th in the final SCIAC Standings and posted a 10-15, 7-9 SCIAC record. The last time the Poets posted a 10-win season was back in 2014-15 when they had 12 victories.
The Purple & Gold were red hot at the start of the game outscoring CMS 15-9 in the first quarter, while shooting 41% from the field and getting nine points from Cali Cubel (Oceanside, Calif.). But that lead soon diminished very quickly as the Athenas regrouped putting up 19 points in the second stanza, while holding WC to just five points. This swung the momentum and gave CMS a 29-20 lead at the break.
Claremont-M-S continued to pour it on in the third quarter adding 27 points. Whittier added another 15 with six coming from Daisy Cardenas (Santa Clarita, Calif.) as she went 2-for-3 from behind the arc. Then in the fourth, the Athenas opened up a 29-point lead with 3:33 to play, which secured the home win.
Whittier shot 30% from the field and 20% from behind the three-point arc. They were outrebounded 41-26 and turned the ball over 13 times, which led to 17 points by CMS.
Cubel led the offense finishing with 11 points and added two assists and two steals. Monica Hanna (Bellflower, Calif.) was a rebound shy of a double double with 10 points and nine boards and Cardenas totaled nine points off the bench all coming on three-pointers.
