WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Water Polo team continues to look strong within Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play as they cruised past the University of Redlands Thursday night 9-3 at the Lillian Slade Aquatic Center.
The Purple & Gold has now won four of their last five, improve to 5-8, 3-2 SCIAC and currently sit in 4th within the SCIAC Standings.
UR got the scoring started within the first three minutes of the game. But it was all Whittier after that as they would rattle off five in a row, which included a 3-0 effort in the second quarter that gave them a 5-1 lead at the break. During the run, Lindsay Shoaff (Costa Mesa, Calif.) tacked on two and was joined by Kendyl Riley (Huntington Beach, Calif.), Bianca Vera (Los Angeles, Calif.), and Marina Daroca Bazan (Barcelona, Spain).
Veronica Ramirez (La Habra, Calif.) added to the Poets lead with an unassisted strike on their opening possession of the second half. Redlands would tack on a 5-meter soon after that cut the deficit to four but Whittier would again counter closing the game out on a 3-1 run, with goals coming from Amelia Gregorio (Aventura, FL), Vera, and Anastacia Gonzalez (Montebello, Calif.).
Whittier outshot the Bulldogs 32-9 and held UR to an 0-3 effort on power-play opportunities. Noa Cravens (Laie, HI) played between the posts and collected a save and five steals.
Whittier has a big SCIAC Showdown tomorrow, Saturday, March 17 when they travel to take on Cal Lutheran University beginning at 11:00am.
