WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Tennis team suffered a tough loss Saturday to Division II Biola University 5-0.
Playing Division II rules was quite different for the Purple & Gold. In doubles, Kindall Yeung (Brea, Calif.) and Amanda Rodriguez (Glendora, Calif.) fell 6-2 at the top spot, while Kallysta Lopez (Whittier, Calif.) and Kiara Embrey (Los Angeles, Calif.) dropped a tight 6-4 set at No. 3, giving the Eagles a 1-0 advantage going into singles.
The last doubles team of Madeline Schmidt-Perez (San Marino, Calif.) and Avery Turner (Austin, TX) were still playing when the doubles point was clinched. They were down 5-3.
In singles, Biola continued to roll. Yeung played a tight first set 6-4, but couldn't keep it going in the second as she fell 6-0. Schmidt-Perez who found herself in the singles lineup at No. 3 fell quickly in the straights 6-0, 6-0. The final two points for Biola came at No. 5 and No. 6. Turner fell in straights 6-1, 6-2, while Embrey was turned away 6-2, 6-2.
Rodriguez and Lopez were still playing when the match was clinched. Rodriguez was down 6-2, 4-2 at No. 2 and Lopez was at 6-1, 4-4 at No. 4.
Whittier begins a nine-match home stand on Friday, March 8 when they host Rhodes College beginning at 3:00pm.
