WHITTIER, Calif. (Oct. 22, 2022) - Whittier fell, 50-7, to Chapman at its homecoming game Saturday but showed flashes of brilliance. The play of the game for the Poets was a 75-yard touchdown pass from freshman Adam Pinard to junior transfer wide receiver Jalen Jolley.
Jolley posted his second career 100-plus-receiving-yard game and his second in as many weeks with 167 yards on seven receptions. The long touchdown came with 12:27 remaining in the game and was the longest offensive play for either team all day. Jolley also hauled in a 53-yard catch in the third quarter off the hands of freshman quarterback Mario Martinez, who received the start for a second consecutive week.
Martinez connected on another long pass in the contest, a 37-yard second-quarter throw to starting running back Jason Terry. The freshman caught three passes for 55 yards and added 26 yards on the ground, including an 8-yard run.
The game began encouragingly for the Poets after they forced a punt on Chapman's opening drive and then marched down to their own 45-yard line before turning the ball over with an interception.
Whittier's second-half performance was encouraging, as it was only outscored 10-7 after trailing 40-0 at halftime.
The Poets posted a season-high 265 passing yards in their second consecutive game with 200-plus yards through the air.
Freshman linebacker DJ Williams led the Poets in tackles for the second straight week with seven, while senior defensive back Sha'Cobe Marzett recorded a career-high-tying five tackles and broke up two passes.
