Poets Fall on Road to Sagehens

CLAREMONT, Calif. (Jan 28, 2023)- Whittier fell on the road to Pomona-Pitzer, 64-45, depite recording 10 steals and shooting 85.7 percent from the free-throw line.

The Poets held an early 10-6 lead in the first quarter, but the game was all Sagehens the rest of the way.

Senior forward Lainie James scored 11 of her 15 points in the second quarter, going 3-for-6 from the floor, 1-for-2 from deep and 4-4 on free throws. She also recorded six boards, two blocks, one steal and one assist.

Sophomore point guard Rhe Nae Leach led the Poets in points with 21 and in rebounds with eight. She went 11-for-11 from the free-throw line and also contributed three steals, two assists and one block.

Guards junior Kailynn Tuck and senior Lizzie Scriven recorded two steals apiece in the loss.

As a team, Whittier made 18 of 21 free throws, shooting an excellent 85.7 percent.

The Poets' next game will be next Saturday at home against CMS. This game will tip off at 2 p.m., ahead of the men's basketball game on the same court.
