PASADENA, CA. (OCT. 15, 2023)- The Whittier College men's soccer team headed out Saturday to take on the Caltech Beavers in Pasadena. The men were looking to bounce back from a tough stretch of games, but the Beavers were the ones who came out on top 4-1.
The first 20 minutes saw both teams come out with strong defenses, as neither was able to get clear shots on goal. Then in the 21st minute, the Beavers were able to make a break to get behind the Poets and score the first goal of the game. Caltech would extend their lead in the 34th minute with their second goal of the game. After this second goal, both teams began to play much more physically and 2 yellow cards were given out in the final 10 minutes of the first half.
As the second half began the two teams were continuing their physical play as a third yellow card was given out within 5 minutes of the start of the half. Things then began to go more downhill for Whittier as an own goal in the 59th minute extended the Caltech lead 3-0. About 10 minutes after this goal, the Poets were finally able to get on the board when Captain, Lawrence Dydell (Redmond, WA, , Woodinville) sliced one past the Beavers goalie on a penalty shot. 5 minutes later though, Caltech re-established firm control over Whittier with their 4th goal.
The Beavers would wind up winning this game by a final score of 4-1. Dydell added to his goal total for the year, but the Poets were not able to get much else going for them. Whittier will look to get back to playing their game next week when they host a tough CMS team. This will be a revenge game for the Poets who dropped the first one against the Stags earlier this year. This game will take place in Memorial Stadium at Whittier College on Wednesday (Oct. 18) at 7:00.
