Roy Kalu (Boston, Mass. / Roxbury CC) of the Whittier College men's basketball team has been named SCIAC Defensive Athlete of the Week for his performance in the Poets' recent victory over Park University Gilbert.
The Poets beat the Buccaneers, 74-64 behind the lowest score the Purple & Gold have allowed all season. Whittier owes some of this to Kalu, who brought plenty of energy with 25 minutes off the bench. Over that time, he picked up three steals, two of which directly led to Whittier baskets. Meanwhile, the Poets also held the Buccaneers to 4-of-19 shooting from deep. Kalu also had a chance to flash his two-way style, chipping in offensively with eight key points off the bench.
Kalu and the Poets played their only game this week against La Sierra University earlier today. Next weekend, the team will head to Las Vegas, Nev. for the D3Hoops Classic, which is set to be held at the South Pointe Hotel & Casino.
