Poets Earn First Win of the Season

WHITTIER, Calif. (March 2, 2023) -- The Whittier College women's tennis team earned its first win of the season Thursday against William Jessup University, 5-4.

Of the six singles contests on the day, the Poets and the Warriors took three apiece. For the Poets, first–year Malvika Suryavanshi (2–6,7–6,7–6), junior Maci Davis (6–1, 6–3), and sophomore Manasvi Vardham (6–1, 6–0) each gained important victories on the day for the Poets.

Doubles competition would prove to be the deciding factor for the Poets against the Warriors.  The Poets would walk away with two of the three doubles matches, ultimately helping them earn the victory.

The pairs of junior Keeley Arendt and Davis (8–2) and Suryavanshi-Vardham (8–2) turned the tide in favor of the Poets. Losing one of these matchups would have resulted in a similar outcome to the Lewis and Clark matchup back on Feb. 12.

In the end, the Poets grinded out a hard-earned victory thanks to impressive performances in both single and doubles competition.

The Poets return to action on Sunday, March 12, welcoming Sewanee College to the Richard Ettinger Tennis Courts at 3:30 p.m.
