LOS ANGELES/WHITTIER, Calif. (March 25, 2023)- The women traveled to LA today to take on the Occidental Tigers in a SCIAC bout. The Poets were able to come away from this game victorious, after downing the Tigers 18-14. They then took on Division 1 Indiana University and were defeated 25-2.
The game began and both teams were ready to battle, each of them trading goals on the other. Jaycee Morris opened up the scoring for the game, and she was followed by Amelia Bennett and Haley Kivett sniping goals. However, the Tigers answered back with 3 goals of their own to make the game even headed to the second.
Occidental took control in the second period and poured on 5 goals against the Poets. Whittier did manage to score 3 goals of their own with Bennett, Margarita Moreno, and Jenna March finding the back of the net. The Tigers were leading the Poets 8-6 at halftime.
Whittier tightened up their defense as the second half began and took advantage of open shots. After going back and fourth throughout the period, each team scoring 3 goals apiece, Whittier was able to cap the period off with 2 goals in the final 50 seconds of the period. Bennett continued her brilliant day with another 2 goals, while Ally Burke (twice) and Grace Arnsparger got in on the scoring. The score was tied at 11 going into the final period.
The Poets went on a scoring frenzy during the fourth. Burke opened up the period scoring 3 goals, then Chloe Gardhouse recorded her first goal. The final goals came from Emily Flores, who scored her first and second goals late in the period. Whittier would win this game 18-14.
Later in the evening, the Poets returned home where they took on Indiana University. After a long game in the morning, the girls could not get in their zone. Burke and Kivett were able to score in this game, but Whittier would be defeated 25-2.
Whittier will be back in action tomorrow as they host 2 more division 1 teams. They will first take on CSUN at 9:00, then they will return at 3:00 to take on Brown. Both these games will be at the Lillian Slade Aquatics Center.
