Box Score CLAREMONT, Calif (April 19, 2023)- In their final game of the season, the women hit the road to take on the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens. The season unfortunately came to an end with a 19-9 defeat.
The Sagehens came out ready to battle this game and went on a 5-0 scoring run. The Poets remained scoreless, until Jaycee Morris found the back of the goal. However, Pomona scored once again to end the period and be up 6-1.
It was the Poets who started out the scoring in the second period. Emily Flores was able to pressure the offense and steal the ball from the Sagehens; this steal allowed Whittier to get down the pool and set up Amelia Bennett for a nice goal. The Poet defense was much better this period, only allowing 2 goals to the Sagehens. Grace Arnsparger inched the Poets back into this game in the final minute of the half, scoring her first goal of the game. The score was 8-3 at the half.
Pomona continued to pour in the goals in the second half. Bennett was able to score her second goal of the game early in the period, but Whittier could not get much of the rest of their offense going. Jenna Marsh did fire one past the goalie at the end of the period, but the Poets were down 15-5 going into the final period.
Bennett continued her great game in the fourth depositing 2 more goals, to bring her total to 4. Later in the period, Morris once again fired one past the goalie for her second of the game. Alexys Puche, who has been the Poets starting goalie for most of the year, ended the scoring for the year, throwing a missile past the Sagehens goalie. Pomona would hold on to win this game 19-9.
Whittier continued to share the ball well tonight, with 5 different women scoring goals. Bennett, in her final game as a Poet, dominated in the pool; she finished the game with 4 goals, 2 assists, 6 points, and 4 steals.
We would like to thank you all for following along this year with the Whittier College Women's Water Polo team. A special shout-out to the 3 graduating seniors (Grace Arnsparger, Amelia Bennett, and Ally Burke), we wish you all the best in your future endeavors!
