Whittier Men Notch Late Goal at Vanguard

COSTA MESA, Calif. (Sept. 1, 2023) – In a hard-fought, gritty match that marked the season opener for both teams, the Whittier College's men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to Vanguard University on Friday.

The Poets showed promising resilience and grit, particularly at such an early point in the season. Hope came in the form of an own goal by Vanguard in the 86th minute after sophomore midfielder Rowan Slater generated an ambitious opportunity in front of the home team's net. Despite the late-game drama, the Poets were unable to capitalize further, and simply ran out of time to generate any further chances.

Vanguard set the tone early on, opening the scoring in just the 12th minute of play. The Poets battled back, however, creating several opportunities to level the scoreline. Forwards Larry Dydell (Redmond, Wash. / Woodinville) and Nils Degardin, along with defender Saar Swanson (Bellingham, Wash. / Squalicum), were particularly active in generating chances, with each player registering a shot on goal.

Goalkeeping duties for the Poets were split between freshman Breckon Robirds and junior Anthony Chavoya, with each guarding the net for half of the game. Both keepers performed admirably, each making a pair of saves to keep their team within striking distance.

Head Coach Shea Harwell and the Poets will return for their home opener on Friday, Sept. 2 when they host George Fox University at 4 p.m.
