Box Score LA VERNE, Calif. (Sept. 20, 2023) – Forward
Lawrence Dydell (Redmond, Wash. / Woodinville) of the Whittier College men's soccer team continued his junior breakout on the road at the University of La Verne on Wednesday evening. Dydell put the ball in the back of the net three times as the Poets rocked the Leopards, 4-0, and earned a key three points in the SCIAC standings.
The third-year star made an early statement when he beat the opposing keeper just three minutes into the contest. Dydell was not done. He continued to find shooting lanes in the Leopards' defense and ended the game scoring on half of his six total shots. The junior once again did it himself approximately 30 minutes after his first goal to double the Poets' lead. At four minutes coming out of the break, Dydell scored a third time on a nice dish from freshman winger
Nils Degardin. The trifecta capped off a career day for Dydell, who subbed out just before the Poets scored for a final time in the 66th-minute.
This time, junior midfielder
Jazey Zavala secured the goal to put Whittier out in front by a four-goal margin. Not to be outdone, Zavala actually matched Dydell with four shots-on-goal, putting the La Verne defense under double the amount of stress.
Defensively, the Poets leaned players such as juniors
Saar Swanson (Bellingham, Wash. / Squalicum) and
Ty Wilson (Kirkland, Wash. / Lake Washington), who played the entire game and helped keep the home team off the board. In fact, the Leopards could only manage one shot-on-target out of 11 total against the Poets, which was turned away by starting goalkeeper
Breckon Robirds. With Whittier comfortably out in front, Robirds gave way to senior
Anthony Chavoya over the game's final six minutes.
Head Coach
Shea Harwell and the Poets will look to keep the good vibes going when they travel to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Saturday, Sept. 24 for a 7 p.m. game.
