WHITTIER, CA. (Sep. 20, 2023)- The women jumped back into action Wednesday night, as they hosted the La Verne Leopards in a SCIAC matchup. Whittier played hard throughout the game and established an early 1 goal lead; however, in the second half La Verne was able to tie it up. The match would end in a 1-1 draw, giving the Poets their second straight tie in conference play.
As the first half began, the Leopards came out firing shots away at the Poets. Beth Juarez (Whittier, Calif., California HS), who has been great in the goal all year for Whittier, did a fantastic job knocking away everything that La Verne fired her way. Then in the 30th minute Alanis Cervantes (La Habra, Calif., La Habra HS) found the cutting Layla Traylor (Covina, Calif., Oak HS). Traylor wound up and fired the ball past the La Verne goalie. Whittier would carry this 1-0 lead through the end of the first half.
The second half started and La Verne came out with more intensity. The Leopards got into position and were able to get one past the Poets goalie in the 51st minute to tie the game. The girls did not give up after this and continued to battle on the field. They had a few opportunities to score, but unfortunately were not able to find the back of the net and the game would end in a 1-1 tie.
Layla Traylor was once again able to score in this SCIAC battle making it her second straight game with a goal. After the game she commented and said "I get my passion from my teammates and especially from seeing how hard my sister is working out there."
Whittier will look to capture their first SCIAC win of the season on Saturday when they host CMS. This game against Claremont will begin at 7:00 at Memorial Stadium.
