WHITTIER, Calif. (Oct. 12, 2024) – Junior midfielder
Rowan Slater (Fort Collins, Colo. / Poudre) featured in a big way once again for the Whittier College men's soccer team, this time at Chapman University in a crucial matchup for the SCIAC standings.
Slater netted the Poets an early lead in the game's 12th minute when he did it himself and beat the opposing keeper. The goal is Slater's team-leading fifth of the season, and Saturday marks the second time in three games the junior has bagged a goal.
From there, Whittier went on to lead for nearly a full hour of game time before Chapman found the game-tying goal. The Poets ultimately had to contend against a deep, talented, and healthy Panthers squad, but acquitted themselves well with several players stepping into larger roles. Sophomore
Alex Brown (Redlands, Calif. / Redlands) filled in between the pipes, and stoned the Panthers on six different occasions to keep the Purple & Gold competitive. Meanwhile,
Osvaldo Avalos (Salinas, Calif. / Alisal Monterrey Peninsula College), a junior transfer in the Poets' midfield, played the full 90 minutes and was one of five visiting players to do so. Joining him in the 90-minute club were Brown, freshman defender
Anthony Dolce (Salt Lake City, Utah / East), and center backs
Gustav Lind (Sylmar, Calif. / Birmingham Community Charter / Los Angeles Mission College) and
Chris Flores (Stockholm, Sweden / Bromma Gymnasium).
Over the game's final minutes, the Poets were able to put a compelling offensive press on the Panthers that resulted in a corner kick and one last potential scoring chance from sophomore winger
Nils Degardin (Paris, France / Lake Washington) as time expired on the game. By tying Chapman, Whittier nabbed its 10th SCIAC point of the season, and currently sits fifth in the conference standings with five points separating the sixth and third place team.
Head Coach
Shea Harwell and the Poets will rematch Chapman at home on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. under the Memorial Stadium lights.
