WHITTIER, Calif. (Jan. 27, 2024) – The Whittier College men's swimming and diving team added to its momentum on Saturday with a SCIAC dual-meet victory over the University of La Verne. The meet will go down as the Poets' final home meet of the season.
Freshman Thomas Langlois continued his dominant ways by sweeping all events, leading the Purple & Gold to a decisive 155-101 win. The rookie phenom swam to a 9:55.97 in the 1000 Free, and also came up big in a crowded 200 Free field, beating out teammate Garrett Dykier with a 1:49.50.
Langlois was not the only Poet to make his presence felt on Saturday. Whittier received positive returns from a pair of debuts. Freshman Adham Harirah won the 100 Breast by a near seven second margin, touching the wall in 1:03.97. Meanwhile, freshman Marton Thuroczy brought the fans in attendance to their feet with his performance in the 50 Free. He beat out fellow international debutant Harirah by eight-tenths of a second with a 23.33, but was also far from Whittier's only event winner of the day.
The Poets bookended the afternoon with victories in the 200 Medley Relay, as well as the 200 Free Relay. Newcomer Harirah featured on both winning teams, while freshman Nolan Morton also played a significant hand. Morton contributed to the 200 Medley Relay team with a 25.90 backstroke split, and went on to also claim wins in the 100 and 200 Back, as well as the 200 IM. Junior Nick Coltrin, meanwhile, sat out the 50 Free but helped both relay teams and won the 100 Free Relay by just under three seconds. He also swam to victory in the 100 Fly. In all, the Poets claimed victories in 12 out of 14 swimming events.
Head Coach Michael Jafari and the Poets will have one more chance to ready themselves for the 2024 SCIAC Championship meet when they travel to Occidental College to face off against the Tigers, as well as the University of Redlands in one last double-dual meet.
